Abraham Brill

In The Night Tourist, Dr. Abraham Brill (above) leads the post-mortem therapy group “Confronting the ‘I’ in Immortality.” This is a fitting activity for the real Dr. Abraham Brill, a Freudian psychiatrist. Born in Austria, Brill (1874-1948) is sometimes credited with introducing psychoanalysis (a.k.a putting people on the couch to discuss their problems) to the United States.

He is also the founder of the New York Psychoanalytic Society on East 82nd Street, which Jack visits.
