Ruthven Todd

Jack meets the Scottish poet, artist, and children’s book writer Ruthven (pronounced “Riven”) Todd in an underworld tunnel and later in the White Horse Tavern. Todd (1914-1978) was also a devoted scholar of the 19th century poet and artist William Blake whose depiction of an angel entering into the gates of hell is above.

In addition to his writing for adults, Todd wrote a series of children’s books about Space Cat, the story of Flyball, a cat who gets to travel into outer space.

In 1947, he moved to New York and later introduced his friend Dylan Thomas to the Horse.
