The Strand

A legendary, landmark bookstore, the Strand is located at Broadway and 12th Avenue, just south of Union Square. The store, which was founded in 1921, was originally one of 48 bookstores on “Book Row” on Fourth Avenue but is now the only one of these original stores remaining. Specializing in used books, the Strand reputes to have 18 miles of volumes crammed onto the floor to ceiling shelves in its cavernous store. (The store has so many books it even rents them out as props for film sets.) I can personally attest to having spent many a pleasurable hour uncovering old treasures and new finds on its shelves. As for the odd book titles that Jack, Euri, and Cora discover, I did not find them at the Strand but they are real!
