The Viele Map—Truth or Fiction?

In Chapter II of The Night Tourist, Jack finds a strange map of New York’s underground waterways by Egbert L. Viele. This map is above and also printed on the inside of The Night Tourist hardcover.

Egbert Viele (1825-1902) was a real topographical engineer in New York. You’ll learn more about him in The Twilight Prisoner, the sequel to The Night Tourist. Here's a photo of him.

In Chapter VIII Professor Schmitt tells Jack and Euri that Viele’s map is still used by builders today. This is absolutely true! Read here to find out how this works.

Take a look at the map one last time. Can you find the way out of the underworld?
